By 1961, Matthews and Mortensen were no longer at Bloomfield Road, and despite a streak to the semi-finals of the 1962 League Cup, it was obvious that Blackpool's glory days were now history. After 3 decades in the top flight, they were demoted into the Second Division in 1967 and the following year they finished third in the league - narrowly missing out on promotion due to goal average. They returned to the top flight in 1970, but were relegated a year later despite winning the Anglo-Italian Cup. They have not been in the top division since.

[edit] Sharp decline
1978 witnessed Blackpool fall into the Third Division, being demoted by one point. This came after finishing fifth the previous season. If they had obtained two more points, they would have pipped Nottingham Forest for promotion to Division One. This also happened in 1974, when, had they achieved two more points, they would have pipped Carlisle United on goal difference for promotion.

Since relegation from what was then Division Two, Blackpool's entire existence has been spent in the lower two divisions of the Football League. In 1981, they were demoted into the Fourth Division for the first occasion in their history. In 1983 they finished 21st and had to apply for re-election, but Blackpool and the three clubs below them were all lucky enough to retain their league status.

[edit] The yo-yo years (1984-1994)
Blackpool's first triumph in more than a decade came in 1985 when they ended runners-up in the Fourth Division and were promoted to the Third Division; however, they were relegated again in 1990.
